Description
Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts per week, 10 hours each (6:30 AM – 5:00 PM)
- Call Requirements: Up to 4 weeknight on-call shifts per 4-week schedule
- Weekend Requirement: Up to 1 working weekend shift every 4 weeks
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units or sister facilities
- Scrub Experience: Strongly preferred
- Trauma Level: Level 1 trauma center environment
Facility Highlights
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- Main Operating Room with 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% Registered Nurses trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
- Charting system: EPIC
- Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
- Note: During hurricane season (June-November, peak in August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience, including OR experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
Schedule & Hours
- 4 shifts per week, 10 hours each (40 hours/week)
- Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be broken down but total no more than 1 shift
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Copy of Driver’s License and Social Security Card
- Completed Employment Application/Resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
- Proof of 2 clinical references (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Background checks including:
- SSN Trace
- County and state criminal checks (including South Carolina)
- Sex Offender Registry
- National Criminal and FACIS 3
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks updated every contract renewal
- Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
- NURSYS license verification (primary source) showing active, unencumbered status
- Radiation Badge process required before starting (may take 5-7 days to receive)
- Color Blind Testing prior to start
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required
- Competency exam for OR required
Health & Safety Requirements
- Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest x-ray if prior positive
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination form
- Seasonal Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31), or medical/religious exemption (no declinations accepted)
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- COVID vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
Orientation & Facility Specifics
- Completion of orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) prior to start is mandatory; failure to complete results in being sent home
- First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay platform access provided after clearance
- Passport-style badge photo required before start (frontal view, solid light background, business casual attire)
- Parking permit required for garage use; additional parking fees may apply outside designated garage
Additional Notes
- Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Block scheduling requests require manager approval and depend on unit needs
- All required return-to-office (RTO) restrictions must be submitted with application and are subject to facility approval
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic OR nursing team and advanced technology. Ideal candidates are experienced OR RNs with strong scrub skills and flexibility to float as needed.
