Registered Nurse - PACU / Same Day Surgery (Travel/Contract)
Location: Berkeley, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float between Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Same Day Surgery (Phase I and Phase II areas)
- Work schedule: 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts (varied start times, typically 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM)
- On-call as needed (maximum 2 times per 4-week schedule)
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in California
- Minimum 2 years of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Job Responsibilities
- Manage nursing care from admission to discharge, ensuring safety, comfort, hygiene, and protection of patients
- Provide competent, compassionate, and cost-effective patient care in accordance with policies and nursing standards
- Respond to medical and environmental emergencies, initiating and directing emergency interventions calmly and efficiently
- Coordinate care delivery with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team members
- Conduct initial and ongoing patient/family assessments including biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, environmental, self-care, educational, and discharge planning factors
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans
- Administer treatments, medications, and nursing skills timely and accurately
- Monitor patient condition and communicate significant changes to physicians
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient acuity and care plans

- Care for Same Day Surgery and Pre-Op patients
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check including SSN trace, county searches, sex offender, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening
- Annual updates required for EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and FACIS screenings
- Education verification required (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred)
- Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per California law)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually (with accommodations for religious exemptions or failed tests)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (annual renewal)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity or vaccination
- Hepatitis B series or declination
- Varicella immunity or vaccination
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov 1 - Apr 30) or signed declination with mask requirement
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually
- Completion of facility-specific documents including job description acknowledgment, standards of business conduct, confidentiality agreements, HIPAA agreement, and others prior to start
- Full 7 years of work history required on application with verification of employment and explanation of any gaps over 30 days
