Description
Registered Nurse (Cardiac Stepdown) - Morgantown, WV
Position Details
- Specialty: Cardiac Stepdown RN
- Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Unit: Stepdown (32 beds total: 22 stepdown beds, 10 floor beds)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Stepdown: 1:3
- Floor: 1:5 or 1:6
- Dress Code: Royal blue scrubs
- Orientation: Unit-specific orientation provided
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses include cardiology cases such as heart failure, cardiac surgery, and general medicine/hospitalist (med-surg) patients.
- RNs are required to titrate drips including heparin, insulin, nitroglycerin, Cardizem, nicardipine, Lasix, amiodarone, and dobutamine.
Staffing & Support
- Dedicated charge nurse on the unit per shift; may take patient assignments depending on staffing.
- Clinical associates (nurse aides) support the unit; typically 2 overnight (1:16 ratio), budgeted for 4 (1:8 ratio).
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes NC, CPAP, BiPAP, HFNC, and trach to vent; dedicated RT assigned to the floor.
- Telemetry monitoring is done by Tele/Monitor Techs using Phillips monitors; RNs do not read their own strips.
Scheduling & Requirements
- Self-scheduling is allowed with flexibility and block scheduling options.
- Weekend requirements for night shift:
- 3-4 Saturdays and Sundays, 2 Fridays, and 2 Mondays in a 4-week period.
- Weekend nightshift requires every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- Holiday coverage includes one evening and one day shift on major holidays (e.g., Black Friday or Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day).
- No call or standby requirements.
- Floating is required; travelers are first to be pulled off the unit if needed, with rotational pull to floor assignments (typically 1 out of 3 shifts).
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Licensure: Current RN license required.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) - AHA
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Cardiac experience preferred but not explicitly required.
