Description
Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel Position
Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Overview
- Cardiovascular Progressive Care (CVPC) stepdown unit with 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds
- Patient population includes cardiovascular surgery (open heart surgeries such as CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, TAVR), thoracic lung surgery (lobectomy, thoracotomy), esophagogastrectomy, abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs (open and endovascular), femoral-popliteal bypass, carotid endarterectomies, and overflow medical cardiology patients (heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, heart block)
- Staffing: Approximately 100 total staff
- Patient ratios: 1 RN to 5 patients; 1 PCT to 13 patients
- Equipment: Baxter IV pumps, CADD epidural pumps, various lifts
- EMR system: Cerner
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Telemetry experience
Required Skills
- Stepdown unit experience
- Telemetry experience
Preferred Skills
- Experience with cardiovascular surgery and vascular surgery patient populations within the past year (including open heart, TAVR, lobectomy, AAA repair, fem-pop bypass)
- Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) experience
Typical Procedures Performed
- Epidural management
- Chest tube management
- Tube feedings
- IV glucose management
- Cardiac drip management (phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine)
Work Environment & Culture
- Fast-paced, team-oriented environment

- Dress code: All navy scrubs, white tops with navy bottoms, or all white scrubs
Scheduling & Shifts
- No on-call requirements
- Minimum 6 weekend shifts (day or night) per 6-week schedule period
- Floating to any stepdown (1:5 ratio) or medical-surgical units (1:6-7 ratio), and ER inpatient holding area (1:6 ratio) may be required
