Description
Registered Nurse (Cardiac Stepdown) - Morgantown, West Virginia
Position Details
- Specialty: Cardiac Stepdown (9SE)
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit Size: 32 beds total (22 stepdown beds, 10 floor beds)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Stepdown: 1:3
- Floor: 1:5 or 1:6
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses include cardiology cases such as heart failure, cardiac surgery, and general medicine/hospitalist (med-surg).
- RNs are required to titrate drips including heparin, insulin, nitroglycerin, Cardizem, nicardipine, Lasix, amiodarone, and dobutamine.
- Respiratory equipment used includes nasal cannula, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, and trach to vent (with dedicated respiratory therapist support).
Staffing & Support
- Dedicated charge nurse on the unit per shift; may take 1-3 patients depending on staffing.
- Clinical associates (nurse aides) support the unit; typically 2 overnight (1:16 ratio), budgeted for 4 (1:8 ratio).
- Telemetry techs monitor cardiac strips remotely using Phillips monitoring systems; RNs do not read their own strips.
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Self-scheduling is allowed with flexibility and block scheduling options.
- Weekend nightshift requires working every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- Nightshift weekend schedule includes 3-4 Saturdays and Sundays, plus 2 Fridays and 2 Mondays in a 4-week period.
- Holiday coverage includes one evening and one day shift on major holidays (e.g., Black Friday or Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or Day).
- No call or standby requirements.
- Floating is required; travelers are first to be pulled off the unit if needed, with rotational floor assignments about 1 out of every 3 shifts.
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current RN license appropriate for West Virginia.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) - American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
Experience
- Cardiac nursing experience preferred.
- RNs must be comfortable titrating drips and managing cardiac stepdown patients.
Orientation & Dress Code
- Unit-specific orientation provided.
- Dress code: Royal blue scrubs.
