Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center
Location: Redding, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery RN for a travel assignment in a Family Birthing Center unit. The unit includes 19 postpartum beds, 12 labor & delivery beds, 2 ORs, and 1 PACU. The facility manages both low and high-risk deliveries and has a Level III NICU.
Work Schedule
- Night shifts, 12 hours per shift
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (Saturday/Sunday days; Friday/Saturday nights)
- Holidays: Work integrated with permanent staff holiday rotation
- Shift times: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
- 12-hour night shifts every other week (EOW) with floating responsibilities
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Patient ratios follow California state guidelines, ranging from 1:4 to 1:1 depending on acuity
- Floating to Pediatrics (couplets) and NICU feeders/growers if experienced
- Common diagnoses: low and high-risk deliveries; transfer out babies with congenital defects requiring immediate surgery
- Laborist (OB physician) available in-house 24/7
- No ventilators on unit; Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
- No IV team; OB techs handle scrubbing and desk coverage
- Electronic Medical Records: Cerner & Fetal Link for fetal heart monitoring (FHM)
- No telemetry patients on this unit
- Scrub color provided by hospital
Orientation & Testing
- Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts depending on circulating experience (circulating not required)
- Dysrhythmia test (proctored, pass/fail) on day one for L/D, Telemetry, Emergency, and Critical Care RNs
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active California RN license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) certification
- COVID-19 vaccination required
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience
Additional Notes
- Peak patient volume occurs in July and October
- Charge Nurse coverage 6-7 days/week; Nurse Manager available Monday-Friday
- No nurse aides on unit; OB techs provide support
- Floating includes pediatric couplets and NICU feeders/growers only if prior experience exists
