Description

Registered Nurse (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring)

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6N (48 beds total, including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum


Job Overview

  • Care for patients with epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological diagnoses.
  • Unit includes 24-48 hour Trend EEG monitoring.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (day and night).
  • Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment).
  • Resource RN available on day and night shifts.
  • Nurse aides (PCTs) support staffing: 1-2 on days, 1 at night.
  • Floating may be required to MedSurg/Telemetry units or other campuses.
  • Weekend requirement: 3 shifts per 4-week period (self-scheduled).
  • Holiday work included in rotation based on unit coverage.
  • Scrub color: Grey’s Anatomy / Steel.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license.
  • Minimum 2 years of core experience in MedSurg/Telemetry or Neuro specialty.
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Certified in Med Surg/Telemetry preferred.
  • Prior travel experience required for Neuro ICU or ED.
  • Cerner EMR experience required.
  • Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts).
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, wound care).
  • Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required, including ability to detect subtle patient changes and assess cranial nerves.
  • Must have natural hair color and no facial piercings.
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles.
  • Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for travel.
  • Cannot hold concurrent contracts with other employers.
  • Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for at least 12 months to qualify for travel assignment.

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks).
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on the unit.
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start.
  • Day 1 includes pass/fail SIMs Lab.
  • Facility is a teaching hospital; nurses may work with nursing students.

Facility & Unit Highlights

  • Teaching hospital with Level 1 Trauma designation.
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy support.
  • Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts.
  • IV team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks.
  • Ventilator support includes BiPAP (managed by RT).
  • Use of self-releasing Velcro seat belts (not restraints).
  • Telemetry mainly MedSurg with some Telemetry required.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be able to maintain sterile technique during SIMs Lab.
  • Facility enforces strict appearance and conduct policies.
  • Nurses not competent in Foley catheter insertion or central line dressing changes are not a good fit.
  • Must be able to float to other units as needed.

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg/Telemetry RNs with strong neuro skills and prior travel experience who are comfortable in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment.
