Job Opportunity: CVICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Towson, Maryland
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:00 - 07:30)
  • Hours per Week: 36
  • Unit: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
  • Patient Census: 3-5 patients daily
  • Unit Beds: 6
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2
  • Common Patient Diagnoses:
    • Post-op cardiac surgery (CABG, MVR, AVR)
    • Cardiac surgery re-admissions/ICU bounce-backs
    • Structural heart procedures (TAVR, mitral clips)
    • Pre-op patients on hospital intensivist list
    • STEMI/NSTEMI, cardiogenic shock
    • Inari procedure
  • Special Procedures/Unit Details:
    • Management of patients in first 6 hours post-op with multiple inotropic medications
    • Hemodynamic instability, extreme coagulopathy, open chest care
    • Use of OHS/Impella, ECMO (perfusionist on-site), CRRT (dialysis on-site), IABP
    • Floating to MSICU as needed
    • On-call required: 24-32 hours per rotating 8-week schedule
  • Weekend/Holiday Requirements:
    • Every third weekend required
    • Holidays required as scheduled

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
  • Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) experience, with CVICU experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • 7-year criminal history within 30 days of start, updated annually
    • Education verification
    • State-specific exclusions list check (Maryland Medicaid Sanctioned Providers List) within 30 days of start
  • Health Requirements:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol, updated annually
    • Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
    • Negative drug screen (9 or 10 panel plus Fentanyl) within 30 days prior to start
    • Fit mask testing (N95) within 1 year of start
    • Tdap vaccine required if working with newborns or small children (not applicable here)
  • References: Two supervisory references within 1 year of start (one must be a supervisor/manager)
  • Employment History: Verification of previous 5-7 years of employment
  • Facility-Specific Documents:
    • Signed job description prior to start
    • Photo for badge (passport style with solid background)
    • Confidentiality agreement signed prior to start
    • Respiratory protection questionnaire completed and signed by a medical professional
    • IT confidentiality agreement to be signed within 24 hours of receipt
    • Badge application to be completed within 72 hours of contract signing
    • Portfolio Epic training test out form (if applicable)

Additional Notes

  • Floating to Medical-Surgical ICU (MSICU) may be required.
  • On-call coverage is part of the schedule.
  • Candidates must be prepared to manage complex post-op cardiac patients requiring advanced hemodynamic support and monitoring.
  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers with CVICU experience are accepted.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized cardiac ICU setting with advanced technology and a focused patient population. Candidates should be confident in managing critically ill cardiac patients and flexible with scheduling requirements including weekends, holidays, floating, and on-call duties.
