Registered Nurse - Surgical Specialty

Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Unit Type: Medical/Surgical unit with mixed Stepdown (SD) and Acute Care (MS) patients
Patient Population:

• Post-surgical kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant patients
• Pre-transplant patients undergoing evaluation
• Patients requiring close monitoring for infection, rejection, and medication delivery

Job Description

• Provide nursing care to patients with a range of health problems from simple to complex under general supervision
• Assume responsibility for an assigned group of patients
• Document patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed treatments
• Assist physicians with examinations and minor diagnostic procedures
• Obtain and monitor physiological data, intervening as necessary
• Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and blood products
• Communicate care plans with patients and families during hospital stay and at discharge
• Make referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel
• Delegate tasks to support staff
• May work either Medical/Surgical or Stepdown patients depending on unit needs and nurse availability
• Preceptor and charge nurse experience preferred

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of acute care surgical floor nursing experience (Med/Surg experience required; OR candidates will not be accepted)
• Stepdown/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience required
• Current RN license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing or a current multistate compact RN license (eNLC)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher from a board-approved program
• Experience with ENT and/or transplant patients preferred
• Transplant experience preferred
• Preceptor and charge nurse experience preferred

Skills and Competencies

• Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures
• Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors
• Some computer skills
• Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees

Additional Information

• This is not a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) position
• Nurses from ICU may be floated to work Stepdown patients based on acuity and skill set
• The unit cares for a complex patient population requiring close monitoring and timely interventions
