Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiac ICU Night Shift
Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Night shift position in a 16-bed Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU
- 12-hour shifts, 36 hours guaranteed per week
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:2, occasionally 1:1 for complex cases (e.g., TPA, balloon pump, crani recovery)
- Fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse patient population including non-English speakers (Hispanic, Sudanese)
- Focus on bedside shift report and intentional hourly rounding
- Remote eICU monitoring system in use
Patient Population & Care
- Patients range from young adults to geriatrics
- Common diagnoses: sepsis, STEMI, COVID, stroke, neurosurgery, renal failure, respiratory failure, COPD, cancer, DKA
- Equipment and therapies include:
- ICP monitoring, balloon pumps (Arrow), Gaymar Hypothermia, Camino Neuro monitoring
- CRRT, Impella, EVDs, lumbar drains
- RNs are required to titrate drips such as sedation, paralytics, pressors, antihypertensives, heparin, insulin
- RNs must read and interpret telemetry/monitor strips
- Respiratory equipment includes nasal cannula through ventilators; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced respiratory devices
Schedule & Staffing
- Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700 (night shift position is 1830-0700)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: as needed
- Floating primarily to Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with potential to float to other hospital areas based on skills
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes patient assignments
- Nurse aides/patient care techs available at a ratio of 1:10
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- RN skills exam during orientation (open book, must pass with 90% or higher)
- Emphasis on critical thinking, willingness to learn, and asking questions
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current RN license
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of unit experience in Cardiac ICU
- Prior travel experience is not required
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Must have a valid driver’s license at time of application (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain large healthcare systems within the radius
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
- Scrub color: Navy Blue for RNs
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
