Medical ICU RN Travel Assignment
Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Medical ICU Registered Nurse for a travel assignment in a mixed acuity unit primarily caring for progressive care patients with some ICU patients. The position involves floating among ICU, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and Medsurg units with a maximum nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Indiana
- Minimum 1.5 years of Critical Care Float experience, including ICU and PCU experience
- Critical Care Float experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Job Duties & Patient Population
- Care for ventilated patients
- Initiate and titrate IV drips including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics
- Assist with intubations and line placements
- Monitor critically ill patients with diagnoses such as sepsis, respiratory failure (acute and chronic), renal failure (acute and chronic), myocardial infarctions, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia
- Provide care on a mixed acuity unit with both ICU and progressive care patients (more progressive care patients than ICU)
Unit Details
- Medical ICU: 24 beds
- Progressive Care Unit: 12 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Progressive Care: 1:3 (or 1:4 with transfers/medical patients)
- ICU: 1:2 (or 1:3 with transfers/medical patients)
- Floating to other ICUs, progressive units, and Medsurg units with maintained 1:3 ratio
Shift & Schedule
- Three 12-hour day shifts per week (e.g., 3am-3pm)
- Traditional weekday plus weekend rotation
- Will not work alone
Equipment & Systems Used
- Phillips heart monitors
- Epic (EMR)
- Pyxis medication dispensing system
- EKG machine
- Dopplers
Orientation & Training
- One day of unit-specific onboarding including policy review and Epic training
- 8 hours of non-billable orientation (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- Clinicians returning within 12 months of last worked date are not eligible for non-billable orientation
Dress Code
- Caribbean blue scrubs
- Jackets must be black, white, or Caribbean blue
- Short or long sleeves worn under scrubs must be black or white
Additional Notes
- Local clinicians within 50 miles may be subject to a rate reduction
- Client may cancel assignment up to 24 hours in advance per 13-week contract
- Candidates should communicate any required time off during the assignment in advance
This position is ideal for a critical care nurse with strong medical ICU experience who is flexible, team-oriented, and able to manage a variety of critically ill patients in a dynamic, mixed acuity environment.
