Registered Nurse - Surgical Specialty

Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Employment Type: Registered Nurse - Direct Care
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week

Job Summary

Provide nursing care under general supervision to patients with a range of health problems from simple to complex on a medical/surgical unit. Care includes pre- and post-surgical patients, some requiring stepdown/PCU level care.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned group of patients, including documentation of patient responses and changes in physician orders.
• Assist physicians with examinations and minor diagnostic procedures.
• Monitor physiological data and intervene as necessary.
• Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and blood products.
• Deliver competent patient care and communicate care plans to patients and families.
• Make referrals for patient care needs and delegate tasks to support staff.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Oklahoma
• Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
• Minimum 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year
• Experience in an inpatient setting
• Acute care experience
• Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
• Experience caring for patients with tracheostomies
• Experience caring for patients with ostomies
• Experience caring for patients with nasogastric tubes (NGT) or double lumen hemodialysis catheters (DHT)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher from a board-approved program.
• Experience with ENT and/or transplant patients.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
• Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues.

Patient Ratios

• Surgical patients: 5:1 ratio
• Stepdown area: 3:1 ratio

Additional Information

• This position will not accept candidates with only operating room (OR) experience.
• Some patients will require stepdown care.

This job does not require prior travel experience.
