Registered Nurse (Neuro MedSurg) - Morgantown, West Virginia
Position Details
- Specialty: Neuro MedSurg (6 West Neuro Unit)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
- Unit Beds: 20 beds (14 floor)
- Patient Ratios: 1:5-6 for floor patients; nurse aide ratio 1:7-10 with 3 nurse aides per shift
- Orientation: Unit-specific orientation includes 1 shift on the unit plus 4 consecutive 12-hour night shifts covering weekends and holidays as scheduled
- Floating: Possible float to nearby units (7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10E) as first priority, then hospital-wide if needed
- Dress Code: Any combination of white and royal blue scrubs
Patient Population and Care
- Common diagnoses include:
- Neurosciences conditions
- Deep Brain Stimulators (DBS)
- Stroke
- Seizures
- Surgical/Postoperative spine patients
- Neurological disorders
- RNs do not need to titrate drips independently; titration is by physician orders or specific protocols with education
- Common drips encountered: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin
- Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7; RNs are not required to have ventilator experience as vents are managed by RT and physicians
- Telemetry monitoring present; RNs verify monitor tech’s strip reading in the electronic health record but do not interpret strips themselves
Required Qualifications
- Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Certifications:
- BLS (AHA) required
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required and must be in hand at time of submission
- ACLS preferred but not mandatory
- Experience:
- Strong neuro experience required, including proficiency with G-tube care
- Recent experience with EPIC electronic health record system required
- Background: Any background hits must be disclosed at time of submission
Scheduling and Work Expectations
- Weekend shifts required:
- Weekend day shifts: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Weekend night shifts: Friday-Sunday or Saturday-Monday
- Weekday night shifts include every other weekend or 3 weekend shifts per schedule
- Holiday shifts are part of the rotation and travelers are expected to participate
- Flexibility is important; while 3 consecutive shifts may be allowed, it is not guaranteed
This position is ideal for RNs with solid neuro med-surg experience, NIHSS certification, and recent EPIC proficiency seeking a night shift travel contract in a neuroscience-focused unit.
