Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse
Location: Castro Valley, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Evening (5 shifts per week, 8 hours each, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Provide professional nursing care to surgical patients in the Operating Room (OR).
- Plan, manage, and coordinate nursing care; provide specialized treatment.
- Direct and supervise ancillary nursing personnel.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team.
- Perform scrub or circulating duties during surgical cases.
- Maintain AORN standards of professional nursing practice.
- Handle emergency or crisis situations; work with bodily fluids and substances.
- Subject to varying and unpredictable situations; OSHA Risk Category I (High Risk).
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
- Minimum 3 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- At least 1 year of total travel nursing experience.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Specialized experience in Orthopedics, Vascular Surgery, Trauma, and Neurology.
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check including SSN trace with all aliases, county searches, nationwide sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, OFAC Sanctions List, and Medi-Cal Suspended and Ineligible Provider List checks as applicable.
- Education verification required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids due to California law).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including clearance for work.
- TB screening: Negative QGold or TSPOT within 90 days or 2-step PPD testing with annual renewal.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years).
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella – proof of immunity or vaccination series.
- Hepatitis B series or signed declination.
- Varicella immunity or vaccination series.
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (11/1–4/30) or signed declination.
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually; religious exemptions and accommodations considered case-by-case.
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually.
- Color blindness exam required if applicable (in-person exam only).
Additional Requirements
- Must be available for on-call as needed.
- Weekend work required every other weekend.
- Must complete facility-specific documents and trainings prior to start, including:
- Job description review and acknowledgment.
- Standards of Business Conduct.
- Vendor training and code of conduct for the applicable year.
- Confidentiality and abuse policies.
- TB questionnaire signed by candidate and healthcare provider (MD, PA, NP/APN, DO, or RN).
- Religious accommodation forms if applicable.
- Employment application must include full 7 years of work history with no gaps.
- Unit-specific skills checklist required, renewed annually.
- Two professional references required (within 3 years) for clinical acute care candidates.
Physical and Work Environment
- Ability to discriminate fine sounds.
- Frequent contact with patients under varied circumstances.
- Exposure to bodily fluids and substances.
- Work in a high-risk OSHA environment.
This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with prior travel nursing experience who are comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-acuity surgical environment during evening shifts.
