Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
• Hours per week: 36
• Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
• Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
• Charting System: EPIC experience required
• Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
• Patient Population: Adult neurological patients, including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
• Unit Details:

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with a 1:5 ratio)
  • Includes 5 dedicated beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring

Required Certifications

• ACLS (American Heart Association only)
• BLS (American Heart Association only)
• NIH Stroke Scale Certification
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Other certifications may be required depending on unit specifics

Required Clinical Skills

• Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
• IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
• Medication administration, including cardiac drips (no titration)
• Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
• Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
• Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, specifically Neuro PCU experience preferred
• Experience with EPIC charting system
• ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• PCU experience within the last year

Background and Health Requirements

• 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years (must be current within 1 year of start)
• E-Verify or attestation required
• Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
• Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases
• Fit mask test within 1 year of start, updated annually (specific mask types accepted)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
• Required immunizations or positive titers for:

  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • Varicella
• TB questionnaire required for all candidates

Scheduling and Policies

• All requests for time off, block scheduling, and special scheduling must be submitted with application
• Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
• Radius rule applies for local candidates (must be within 100 miles)

Additional Notes

• Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
• Professional photo required for badge (no selfies or filters, plain background)
• Must complete compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing contract
• References and skills checklist must be updated annually

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neuro progressive care unit with a focus on neurological and neurosurgical patient care in a Level I Trauma Center environment.
