Description

Registered Nurse – PCU (Pulmonary/GI)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift Details

  • Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • May work every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks

Unit & Patient Population

  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) focused on Pulmonary/GI patients
  • Adult and geriatric patients; no ventilators on unit
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio: 5:1
  • Daily census approximately 27 patients
  • May float within skillset

Required Clinical Skills

  • Experience in PCU, DOU, IMC, or stepdown settings
  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Familiarity with common IV medications: Cardizem (no titration), Amiodarone, Heparin (protocol), Insulin (protocol)
  • Respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Use of rapid response/code teams and isolation precautions
  • Epic charting experience required

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Proficient in cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Background check covering 7 years of history, including education verification and various federal/state checks, must be current within 1 year of start
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually if applicable
  • Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing possible if needed)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunization or positive titer documentation for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form during flu season
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation materials prior to start
  • Two clinical references required
  • Annual skills checklist and competency exams as applicable

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates accepted within radius rule
  • Must submit all scheduling requests with application
  • Floating may be required within skillset

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation for nursing excellence, serving a diverse adult and geriatric patient population in a specialized PCU setting.
