RN - NICU
Overview
- Location: Salem, Virginia
- Employment type: Travel
- Specialty: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Hours per week: 36
- Contract length: 13 weeks
Schedule
- 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
- 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Ready for huddle at 6:45
- Willing to block schedule
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- NICU - Neonatal Intensive Care (2 years of experience)
- NICU - Neonatal Intensive Care experience within the last year
- BLS
- NRP
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- IV insertion in preterm or term infants
- Knowledge of symptoms of declining health in preterm infants
- Ability to care for and stabilize critically ill infants needing ventilator support
- CPAP management
- Umbilical venous catheter (UVC) placement
- Surfactant administration
- Needle decompression
- Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) administration
- Lipids administration
Unit Details
- 6 beds total: 5 open bays and 1 isolation room
- Patient ratio: 1:2-3
- Staffing includes RN and RT
- New NICU with new equipment
- Hospital-provided scrubs
Clinical Skills and Experience
- IV insertion in preterm or term infants
- Able to work independently with strong assessment skills
- Knowledge of symptoms of declining health in preterm infants
- Breastfeeding support
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to care for and stabilize critically ill infants needing vent support, CPAP, UVC placement, surfactant administration, needle decompression, TPN, and lipids
Common Procedures on the Unit
- Newborn resuscitation
- Intubation
- Umbilical line placement
- Surfactant administration
- Needle decompression
- Chest tube insertion
- NG/OG feedings
Additional Notes
- Floating may include Birth Response / Stork Nurse
- Uses Meditech and Centricity Perinatal for documentation
