NICU II Nursery RN

Overview

• Traveling RN for a Level II NICU/Nursery unit with a 12-bed nursery.
• 12-hour night shifts.
• 36 hours per week.
• Contract length: 13 weeks.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in California.
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
• NICU - Neonatal Intensive Care (3 years of experience).
• NICU - Neonatal Intensive Care experience within the last year.
• One completed travel assignment.
• BLS issued by American Heart Association.
• NRP.
• Experience attending deliveries in the role of baby nurse with responsibility for immediate newborn care and neonatal resuscitation.
• Couplet care experience.
• Breastfeeding techniques and education skills.
• Charge nurse experience.
• Comfort with stabilization and high-flow nasal cannula and CPAP management.
• Nursery experience.
• Experience with Epic.

Preferred Qualifications

• Charge experience.
• Pediatric/PICU experience to help with floating.
• RNC-NIC.
• STABLE certification.

Unit Details

• Level II NICU/Nursery.
• 8 beds.
• Average census: 2–3 patients.
• Ratios: 1:2:3, with at least 2 nurses always on the unit.
• Common patient types include 31 weeks and higher, hyperbilirubinemia, phototherapy, hypoglycemia, IV antibiotics, and feeders.
• Nurses attend deliveries as the baby nurse and may initiate resuscitation if needed.
• Neonatologist is available 24/7 but not in house.
• No nurse aides.
• Charge nurse/house supervisor may take a small patient assignment if needed.
• Vented patients are rare; if present, they are typically transferred within 24 hours or less.
• Nurses must be comfortable with high flow nasal cannula and CPAP.
• Tele monitors and fetal monitors are used; nurses monitor all tele.
• Floating is expected, including to couplet care and to help with other tasks.
• Call may be required, with availability within 30 minutes.
• Weekend requirement: every other.
• Holiday coverage is worked into the permanent staff rotation.
• Orientation is typically 2–3 shifts, depending on experience.
• Scrubs are provided.
