MedSurg RN
Overview
- Role: RN (Registered Nurse)

- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
- Contract length: 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- Must be comfortable reading strips and escalating concerns to a physician
- RN must titrate drips
- Must be able to work in a rural, lower-resource setting with typically lower patient volumes
- Driver’s license must be submitted
Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
- No tele/monitor techs on the unit
- Charge nurse takes an assignment
- Nurse aide support: 1 aide for the floor once census reaches 9 patients
- Common patient types include CHF, hypertension, chest pain work-ups, COPD exacerbations, asthma, pneumonia, pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, gastrointestinal bleeding, and acute renal failure
- Common titratable/set-rate drips include analgesics for pain, anticoagulants for blood clots, and antihypertensives for blood pressure control
- Respiratory equipment on the unit includes CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow, and vents
Scheduling and Work Expectations
- Self-scheduling and block scheduling are available
- Full-time and part-time staff are expected to self-schedule a minimum of six weekend shifts per six-week schedule
- Holiday coverage is required
- Call or standby is determined by the nurse manager
- Floating is determined by the nurse manager and department needs
- May float to ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele
- May be asked to float into any other acuity level, including ICU low-acuity holds
Orientation
- Orientation date and location are assigned during the week of orientation
- Clinicians must be in state for the week of orientation, even if first-day modules are remote
Dress Code
- Navy blue scrubs
