Unit Details
- Med/Surg unit
- 5th floor
- 22 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
- No tele/monitor techs on the unit; RNs are not required to read their own strips
- Charge nurse takes an assignment
- Nurse aide ratio: 1:50
Clinical Experience / Patient Population
- Common patient types include CHF, hypertension, chest pain work-ups, COPD exacerbations, asthma, pneumonia, pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, gastrointestinal bleeding, and acute renal failure
- RNs are required to titrate drips
- Common titratable drips include analgesics for pain, anticoagulants for blood clots, and antihypertensives for blood pressure control
- Respiratory equipment on the unit includes Cpap, BiPap, High Flow, and vents
Scheduling and Work Expectations
- Self-scheduling and block scheduling are available
- Full-time and part-time staff are expected to self-schedule a minimum of six weekend shifts per six-week schedule
- Holiday coverage is required
- Call or standby is determined by the nurse manager
- Floating is determined by the nurse manager and department needs; in an extreme need, float within Zone 1
- May be asked to float into ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele
- Must be in state for the week of orientation, even if first-day modules are remote
