Unit & Role Details

• Unit Name: Level 2B - Special Care Nursery
• Unit Description: 25-bed unit including Labor & Delivery (L&D), Postpartum (PP), Newborn Nursery (NBN), 2 Operating Rooms (ORs), 2 Antepartum Nursery (ANU) rooms, and Recovery Room (RR).
• Patient Population: Mothers and newborns, average daily census 15-25.
• Bed Count: 5 L&D rooms, 12 PP beds, 2 ORs at RR, 2 ANU rooms with 4 beds.
• Clinician to Patient Ratio:

  • L&D: 1:2-3 for evaluations, 1:1 for active labor, magnesium gtt, or epidural
  • PP: 1:3-4
• Shifts:

  • 36 hours per week, nights and every other weekend (EOW)
  • Day shifts rotate (7a-7p, 11a-11p, 7p-7a) with 1 night of call
  • Evening and night shifts do not rotate
• Floating: Not required
• EMR System: EPIC

Experience & Skills Required

• Minimum 3 years nursing experience
• At least 2 years NICU experience required
• Skill sets: Special Care Nursery & Newborn Care

Certifications & Licenses Required

• Mandatory:

  • BLS (AHA, Red Cross, CHSF, or Military; AHA preferred)
  • NRP (AHA, Red Cross, CHSF, or Military; AHA preferred)
  • Valid nursing license with primary source verification (no MA conditional licenses)
• Additional Required Credentials:

  • Fit Test for N95 respirator (within 365 days, updated annually)
  • MGB Medication Exam (80% passing within 365 days)
  • MMR vaccination or proof of immunity
  • Influenza vaccine during flu season (Sept 15 - April 30)
  • TB test documentation within 3 months of start date
  • Health statement signed by MD/DO/NP/PA within 365 days
  • Criminal background checks including Massachusetts CORI, SSN trace, National Sex Offender Check, and Exclusion Checks
  • Respirator Medical Clearance Attestation (if fit test required)
  • Education verification of highest degree achieved
• Preferred but Optional:

  • Hepatitis B vaccination or proof of immunity
  • Tdap vaccine within last 10 years

• Two recent references (minimum one supervisor or above in skillset)

Additional Notes

• No floating required
• No religious exemptions for fit testing or influenza vaccine
• Fit testing cannot be done onsite; must be completed prior to start
• Background checks and credential verifications must be current and updated as required
