Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED)
Location: Utica, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Facility Overview
- Brand new, state-of-the-art 68-bed ED unit including super track, psych, and trauma areas
- All private rooms
- Level 3 trauma center
- Comprehensive Stroke Center
- Regional Cardiac Center (Cath, EP, IR)
- Pediatrics services available
- High patient volume with ED nurse-to-patient ratios typically 1:4 or 1:5, subject to change based on staffing and acuity
- Support staff includes PCTs, first-look RN, triage RN, charge RN, secretary, respiratory therapists, lab, and critical response RN
Job Requirements
- Valid New York RN license
- Minimum 3 years of specialty experience in Emergency Department nursing and travel experience
- Certifications required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- TNCC or ATCN (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- Epic electronic health record experience required
- Work schedule includes every other weekend; no block schedule guaranteed
- Orientation includes half-day clinical orientation and half-day shadowing on unit
Clinical Responsibilities & Skills
- Experience with drips such as TNK, Cleviprex, and Level 1 infusion for massive transfusion protocol (MTP)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment with occasional hallway beds
- Competency exams required including medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG (especially for ICU, PCU, ER, CT ICU, and 7th Floor M/S Unit)
- Must complete facility-specific online learning modules prior to first shift
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License/State ID)
- Emergency contact form
- Certifications must be current and preferably AHA-approved (BLS, ACLS, PALS)
- Background check with 7-year search, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks updated annually
- Professional references (2 for travel/allied/per diem acute care; 1 for per diem non-acute care) within 3 years
- Skills checklist and education verification required annually
- Facility-specific documents including job description, Omnicell form, and welcome packet acknowledgment
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask test within 1 year and updated annually (specific N95 masks required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (PPD, Quantiferon Gold accepted; Tspot not accepted)
- Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
- Varicella (titer, vaccine, or history of chickenpox)
- Drug screening: 9-panel drug screen within 1 year of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (Sept 1 - Mar 31)
- Pneumonia vaccination or declination required
- COVID-19 vaccines preferred but not required
- Harassment prevention training certificate required (New York specific)
