Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Lansing, New York
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Setting: Juvenile correctional facility

Job Description

Provide nursing interventions and medication administration following a systematic problem-solving approach to deliver comprehensive nursing care compliant with regulatory standards in a juvenile correctional setting.

Facility Overview:

• Serves male juvenile offenders, some in custody until age 21
• Accredited by the American Correctional Association
• Population approximately 18 youth

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain general medical inventory, including controlled substances
• Conduct medication administration
• Review and evaluate health conditions and nursing intervention plans for youth
• Ensure interventions align with comprehensive treatment plans
• Participate in staff trainings
• Prepare clinical and administrative reports
• Maintain infection control standards
• Serve as a member of the facility’s medical treatment team

Qualifications

• Licensed and registered to practice nursing in New York State
• Minimum of 1 year post-licensure nursing experience

Required Certifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Valid New York State RN License

Competency Requirements

• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required for RNs)
• General Competency Exam (required for all candidates)

Health and Safety Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year of start date
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months prior to start (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD accepted)
• Vaccination documentation or titers for:

  • Rubeola (Measles)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (vaccination, titers, or declination)
  • Varicella
• Drug testing (9-panel) within 1 year of start
• Seasonal flu vaccination or declination (2025-26 season)
• COVID-19 vaccine booster preferred but not required

Background and Compliance

• Background check within 1 year covering last 7 years of residence, work, or school
• 2 professional references required
• Transcript or diploma required for licensed positions
• Fingerprinting and criminal background check required (completed onsite except for certain facilities)
• Clearance from New York Statewide Central Registry and Staff Exclusion List

This position requires adherence to strict regulatory and facility-specific documentation and compliance standards due to the correctional healthcare environment.
