Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Pediatric Float Pool

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position in the SRO Float Pool, floating to various pediatric units including:
    • PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)
    • NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
    • Pediatric Med/Surg
    • Pediatric ED Boarders
    • Postpartum / Mother-Baby units
  • Must have PICU and NICU experience and be comfortable with pediatrics. Previous NICU/PICU float pool experience considered.
  • Night shifts, 36 or 48 hours per week.
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed.
  • Must work every other weekend and 2 out of 3 winter holidays.
  • Up to 40 hours can be approved for time off.
  • Must adhere to the facility’s float policy.
  • Epic electronic health record experience required.

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years PICU experience required.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Dr. Brown’s Infant Driven Feeding Certification (can be pending at start; cost applies)
  • Virginia nursing license (can be pending at start)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Proof of I9 or attestation.
  • Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during hours of service.
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year criminal check within 60 days of start, updated annually.
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days.
    • HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days.
    • Education verification through a 3rd party vendor; official transcripts required (photocopies not accepted).
    • Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit.
    • Abuse registry search required only for certain behavioral health units.
  • State-specific fingerprinting and child abuse registry checks for Virginia as applicable.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (no declinations allowed)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no declinations)
    • Hepatitis B: Positive surface antibody titer required; additional antigen titer if antibody is low/negative
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required (declination accepted but must be documented)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions or declinations accepted)
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually.
  • Fit testing for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if required.

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Review and initial professional appearance guidelines.
  • Complete various facility-specific forms prior to start (e.g., release authorization, TB screening, traveler compliance).
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and mother-baby units (not required for pediatrics or NICU/PICU).
  • Medication and competency exams as applicable.
  • References and performance evaluations required for credentialing.

Notes

  • Candidates with latex allergy must complete a latex questionnaire.
  • Pass/fail testing and acknowledgment required for certain adult inpatient roles but not for this pediatric float pool position.
  • Radiation badges are not provided for new candidates; existing badge holders will continue to receive badges until assignment ends.

This position is ideal for experienced pediatric critical care nurses with strong NICU/PICU backgrounds who are flexible with floating across pediatric units and working night shifts.
