Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Facility: University of Virginia Medical Center


Contract Details

  • Length: 13 weeks
  • Schedule: 5 days per week, 8-hour shifts
  • Weekends: 2-3 weekends during contract

Required Experience

  • Pediatric case management experience
  • Acute care hospital inpatient case management experience
  • VA nursing license accepted, including pending VA license submissions

Certifications & Licenses

  • Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or ARC accepted
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – ARC or AHA accepted
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – ARC or AHA accepted (as applicable)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – AHA/AAP accepted (as applicable)
    • Chemotherapy Certification (ONS/ONCC) if working in chemo/oncology/infusion
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – ENA accepted (as applicable)
    • State Nursing License Primary Source Verification (required within 30 days of start)
    • NURSYS Verification (for RNs/LPNs) within 30 days of start
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) for Behavioral Health nurses only
  • Preferred/As applicable:
    • NIH Stroke Certification
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
    • Miscellaneous certifications for NICU and Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • Education verification through a 3rd party vendor (BSN preferred; ASN required if no BSN)
  • Abuse Registry Search (only for Behavioral Health and Unit 5 East candidates)
  • Fingerprinting via Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check (as required)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Measles (Rubeola) – 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no declinations)
  • Mumps – 2 vaccines or positive titer required (declination accepted but not clearance hold)
  • Rubella – 2 vaccines or positive titer required (declination accepted but not clearance hold)
  • Hepatitis B – Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required or negative Surface and Antigen titers within 6 months
  • Varicella – 2 vaccines or titer required (negative titer requires declination)
  • Drug testing within 2 months of start, updated annually (10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions)

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of various forms prior to start (e.g., professional appearance guidelines, release authorization, TB screening, traveler compliance)
  • Fit testing for patient-facing clinical roles (completed onsite if required)
  • Pass/Fail Cardiac Rhythm Assessment during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and Mother-Baby units (not required for Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Oncology, etc.)
  • Acknowledgment of pass/fail testing required for applicable units
  • Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable

Additional Notes

  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Performance evaluations and internal evaluations required if previously worked with the system over 1 year
  • Skills checklist must be updated annually for applicable units
  • Radiation badges are no longer provided by the agency for new candidates; must be supplied by the facility if needed

This position is ideal for RNs with pediatric and acute inpatient case management experience seeking a 13-week travel contract in Virginia. Compliance with extensive background checks, certifications, and health requirements is mandatory.
