Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Facility Type: Community Hospital
Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
Staffed Beds: 240 beds (16 bed ICU)
Charting System: EPIC
Scrub Color: Navy
Parking: Free


Contract Details

  • Length: 13 weeks
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating within scope may be required between departments, units, and facilities
  • On-call: Not required
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years (including community hospital experience)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
  • Charge Nurse Experience: Preferred

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (NIHSS)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) preferred

Skills and Competencies Required

  • Work Settings: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Telemetry Oncology, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Cardiovascular Care:
    • Post Cardiac Angiogram, Post MI, Pre/Post Cardiac Cath
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • Genitourinary/Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line, peripheral line, PICC line care and management
    • Starting IVs
  • Medications:
    • Heparin protocols
    • Management of cardiac and vasoactive drips (no titration)
    • PCA management
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: CVA care
  • Plastics: Surgical drains
  • Respiratory:
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • External CPAP/BIPAP
    • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
    • Interpretation of ABGs
    • Nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
  • Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care/wound vac

Preferred Skills:

  • Cardiovascular sheath removal
  • Accessing ports, phlebotomy
  • Orthopedics: total joint replacements

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID (Driver’s License/State ID)
  • Criminal background check (7-year search, statewide and nationwide as applicable) updated within 6 months
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks quarterly
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree (no pending at start)
  • State license primary source verification (Missouri license verifiable on NURSYS)
  • NURSYS verification required
  • Color blind testing within 12 months of start
  • Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency (80% pass rate)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
  • Skills checklist within 1 year of start (oncology skills checklist if applicable)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap (or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (2-step PPD or equivalent)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include full panel and not expire during assignment
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, regulatory compliance education, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
  • Orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) required prior to start
  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • No pending license accepted
  • No block scheduling accommodation
  • No on-call requirement
  • Must adhere to facility policies including dress code, hand hygiene, and fingernail policies
  • Floating between units and departments expected as needed

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experience in a community hospital setting, comfortable with telemetry and progressive care patients, and willing to work a travel contract with weekend shifts and floating responsibilities.
