Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU - Progressive Care Unit)
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (default to higher if discrepancy)
  • First-timers Accepted: Yes
  • Shift Requirements:
    • Ratios: 1:5
    • 8 weekend shifts required per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
    • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
  • Floating: Must float within scope to all MSI units including ED for inpatient holds
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: Minimum 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale Certification)

Required Skills and Experience

  • Work Settings: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
  • Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Telemetry monitoring (unit and remote)
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Cardiovascular Care:
    • Post cardiac procedures (angiogram, MI, cardiac cath, surgery)
  • Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • Renal: Pre/Post Hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line, peripheral line, PICC line care and management
    • Starting IVs
  • Medication Management:
    • Heparin protocols
    • Cardiac drips (no titration), PCA, procedural sedation administration, titration of cardiac drips
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: CVA care
  • Orthopedics: Peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
  • Plastics: Surgical drains
  • Respiratory: Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, nasal cannula, oxygen masks, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
  • Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, wound care, wound vac

Preferred Skills:

  • IV therapy/phlebotomy: Accessing ports
  • Oncology: Monitoring chemotherapy

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, sex offender, international if applicable)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks quarterly
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required (no pending at start)
  • Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units
  • State-specific searches and registries as applicable (Missouri and Illinois)
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include full panel and not expire during assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap (or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (2-step PPD or equivalent)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccines, or declination)
    • Hepatitis B declination required (not vaccination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept-April)

Competency Exams & Training

  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Unit-specific competency exams annually (including oncology competency for Med Surg-Oncology unit)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 12 months of start (80% pass rate)
  • Color blindness testing within 12 months of start
  • Mandatory facility-specific orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) completed prior to start
  • Regulatory compliance education completed and passed with 80% or higher annually
  • Additional certifications as applicable:
    • PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, MAB/CPI (based on unit requirements)

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application required
  • Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start (oncology skills checklist if applicable)
  • Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgements (HIPAA, confidentiality, latex allergy, dress code, hand hygiene, fingernail policy, TB questionnaire, etc.) must be completed prior to start

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
  • Floating to multiple units including Emergency Department is expected
  • No on-call requirement specified

This position is ideal for Registered Nurses with at least 2 years of experience in progressive care or telemetry settings who are comfortable with a variety of cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and post-surgical patient care responsibilities. Candidates must be prepared to meet comprehensive compliance, certification, and competency requirements prior to assignment start.
