Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit Nights
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Shift Details
- Unit: Step Down Unit (Nights)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
- Weekend Requirement: 2 shifts every other weekend (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday for night shift)
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (3 shifts of 12 hours)
- Floating: Yes, within scope to lower acuity floors
- Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
- Local Radius Rule: 75 miles
- Pending License Accepted: Yes
- On-call: No
Experience & Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse
- Required Years of Experience: 2 years (must have been at bedside within last 6 months)
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required
- First-time Travelers: Not accepted
Certifications Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for all nurses)
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI/MAB) – verify with unit specifics
Clinical Skills & Special Requirements
- Experience with titration of vasopressors, sedation medication, insulin drips
- Management of trach vents, arterial lines, external pacemakers, chest tubes
Facility & Documentation Requirements
- Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital
- Total Staffed Beds: 233
- Charting System: EPIC
- Parking: Free
Background Checks & Compliance
- Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide and nationwide)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks quarterly
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- State-specific searches and registries as applicable (Missouri and Illinois)
- Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units (not for home care)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year
- Fit mask testing (N95) required annually; onsite fit testing available if needed
- Tdap vaccine or declination required (expires every 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (2-step PPD or equivalent)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination required
- Drug testing within 1 year, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
Facility-Specific Documents & Training
- HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Regulatory Compliance Education (annual)
- Hand Hygiene, Fingernail, Dress Code policies acknowledgment
- Orientation modules (~16 hours) required for all RNs (not required for recent BJC travelers)
- Badge photo and facility badge required
References & History
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start
- Employment application required

- Must be able to float to lower acuity floors as needed
- No block scheduling or local candidates accepted
- Must meet all facility and state-specific compliance and credentialing requirements prior to start
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with at least 2 years of recent bedside experience, comfortable working nights in a step down acute care setting, and able to meet comprehensive certification and compliance standards.
