Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Step Down Unit (Days)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:4
  • Shift: Days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (3 shifts of 12 hours)
  • Weekend Requirement: 2 shifts every other weekend
    • Day shift: Saturday and Sunday every other weekend
    • Night shift (if applicable): Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday depending on rotation
  • Floating: Yes, within scope to lower acuity floors
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (local radius rule: 75 miles)
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes
  • Return to Office Restrictions: None

Experience & Requirements

  • Recent Experience: Must have been at the bedside within the last 6 months
  • Clinical Skills Required:
    • Experience with ventilators
    • Titration of vasopressors
    • Insulin drips
    • Sedation medication
    • Trach vents
    • Arterial lines
    • External pacemakers
    • Chest tubes

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI/MAB) — verify with unit description

Facility & Documentation Requirements

  • Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital
  • Total Staffed Beds: 233
  • Charting System: EPIC
  • Parking: Free

Background Checks & Compliance

  • Criminal background check within 6 months (7-year search including statewide and nationwide checks)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks quarterly
  • Education verification required (highest nursing education)
  • State-specific searches and registries as applicable
  • Fingerprinting required for certain Illinois long-term care or rehab units
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap (or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray (with yearly questionnaire)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
    • Hepatitis B declination required (vaccine not mandatory)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season

  • Latex Allergy Questionnaire (annual)
  • Confidentiality Form (annual)
  • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual, must score 80% or higher)

  • Orientation Modules (approx. 16 hours, required for all RNs and LVNs)
  • Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, taken within 6 months)

Additional Notes

  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this assignment.
  • Candidates must meet all compliance and credentialing requirements prior to start.
  • Floating to lower acuity floors may be required.
  • No on-call requirement.
  • Block scheduling is not accommodated.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with recent bedside experience in critical care step down settings who are comfortable managing complex patients requiring advanced monitoring and medication titration.
