Job Opportunity: RN Medical/Surgical Telemetry

Location: Oneonta, New York
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Combined Medical/Surgical and Telemetry unit (2 North + Observation)
  • Nurses may float between 2 North and Observation units based on staffing and patient needs

Patient Population

  • Adult to older adult patients

Unit Details

  • 2 North: General Medical/Surgical unit with up to 25 beds
  • Observation Unit: 7–14 beds depending on facility needs

Common Diagnoses

Observation Unit:

  • Acute on chronic CHF
  • Hypertension
  • Syncope
  • Electrolyte imbalances (hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia)
  • Dehydration
  • Post-operative patients requiring extended observation

2 North:

  • Hypertension
  • Acute on chronic respiratory failure
  • Pneumonia
  • COPD exacerbation
  • Controlled atrial fibrillation
  • Hyponatremia
  • Generalized weakness
  • COVID
  • Sepsis
  • Hematuria with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
  • Anemia
  • End-of-life care
  • Post-operative care for total knee and hip replacements, and other minor surgeries

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Basic telemetry monitoring (centralized, 24/7 monitored by telemetry technicians)
  • Common infusions: Heparin, Magnesium, Potassium, Continuous IV fluids
  • No advanced titratable cardiac drips
  • No routine mechanical ventilation; higher-acuity respiratory support managed outside these units
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Observation: 1:5-6
    • 2 North: 1:5 (may flex to 1:6)

Support and Resources

  • Support aides available (3 per shift on 2 North, 1 per shift on Observation)
  • Unit clerk available 9am–5pm
  • 24/7 respiratory therapy, phlebotomy, and security services
  • Nurses start IVs (no designated IV team)
  • Rapid Response and Code teams assigned per shift
  • Night-shift provider coverage for orders and floor needs
  • Surgical providers on-call but rarely needed
  • Pharmacy support remote after hours; most meds stocked in Pyxis
  • Wound care SWAT nurse available on day shift for consultation

Equipment & Technology

  • Continuous cardiac telemetry monitoring
  • Baxter IV pumps
  • EPIC electronic charting system
  • Pneumatic tube system for transport

Orientation

  • Starts on day shift with unit educator
  • Includes glucometer competency, policy review, and floor time with preceptor
  • Night-shift travelers begin day shift orientation then transition to PM shifts with preceptor

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Nursys verification and license/certificate verification required
  • Completion of facility-specific competencies and skills checklists
  • Required health screenings and immunizations including:
    • MMR
    • Fit test
    • Hepatitis B
    • Influenza vaccine
    • TB test and annual TB questionnaire
    • Varicella
    • Physical/Health statement
    • Drug screen
  • Professional requirements:
    • Driver’s License/State ID
    • Two professional references
    • Criminal background check
    • Resume submission
    • Education and employment verification
    • National and state sex offender registry checks
    • Facility-specific client forms and confidentiality agreements
