Registered Nurse - PCU

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU), 24-bed Intermediate Unit
  • Patient Types: Intermediate medical patients and surgery overflow (e.g., TURPS, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, eye surgery, oral surgery, diabetic teaching, wound care)
  • Fast-paced environment supporting throughput from Emergency Department and Operating Room
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5; may flex to 1:6 occasionally
  • Floating between departments, units, and facilities may be required
  • Weekend shifts required: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Holiday shifts and Charge RN assignments as needed
  • First-time travelers not accepted
  • Locals accepted within the area
  • No block scheduling accommodation
  • No on-call requirement

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
    • BLS issued by American Heart Association
    • NIHSS
    • NRP
    • PALS issued by American Heart Association
  • Clinical skills:
    • Cardiac monitoring and telemetry-on the unit monitoring
    • Emergency response including management of dysrhythmias
    • IV insulin protocols
    • Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) management
    • IV therapy including PICC line management
    • Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA)
    • Neurological care including stroke (CVA) experience

Work Setting

  • Medical-Surgical/Telemetry
  • Cardiac Telemetry
  • ER Holding
  • Neuro Stepdown
  • PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown

Licensure & Compliance

  • Registered Nurse license required for Missouri
  • Government-issued ID required
  • Background checks including criminal, statewide, and federal searches required and must be current
  • Education verification required
  • Drug testing required within 1 year of start and must remain valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start required
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Competency exams required including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and compliance education modules annually
  • Must adhere to facility policies including dress code, hand hygiene, fingernail policy, and confidentiality
  • References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
  • Employment application required

Schedule & Hours

  • Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks
  • No more than 7 days off between shifts (RTO restrictions)

Notes

  • Regular floating within scope of practice may be required to meet facility needs
  • No pending license accepted
  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this assignment

This position is ideal for experienced telemetry RNs comfortable in a fast-paced PCU environment with strong cardiac monitoring and emergency response skills.
