Job Description

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU Float)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
  • Preferred Experience: Previous charge nurse and teaching hospital experience
  • First-time Travelers: Accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Holiday Shifts & Charge RN Assignments: As needed
  • Floating: Will float within scope to all Medical-Surgical-Intermediate (MSI) units including Emergency Department for inpatient holds
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Locals Accepted: Yes
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office Restrictions: No more than 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be regular shift length)

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Skills & Work Settings

  • Experience in MS/Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units
  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response including:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Telemetry monitoring (unit and remote)
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Cardiovascular care: Post cardiac events, angiogram, MI, cardiac catheterization, cardiac surgery pre/post care
  • Endocrine/Metabolic: IV insulin protocols
  • Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
  • Renal: Pre/Post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
  • IV therapy and phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line and peripheral line care, PICC line management, starting IVs
  • Medication management: Heparin protocols, cardiac drips (no titration), PCA, procedural sedation administration, titrating cardiac drips
  • Neurological/Psychiatric: Stroke (CVA) care
  • Orthopedics: Peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
  • Plastics: Surgical drains
  • Respiratory: Chest tubes, external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, nasal cannula, oxygen masks, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
  • Professional skills: Isolation precautions, wound care, wound vac

Preferred Skills:

  • Accessing ports for IV therapy/phlebotomy
  • Oncology monitoring during chemotherapy

Required Compliance & Documentation

  • Government-issued ID (e.g., driver's license)
  • Criminal background check within 6 months (including statewide, nationwide, and international if applicable)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree
  • Professional license primary source verification (Missouri RN license verification via NURSYS)
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including full panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) annually, with specific protocols for failed tests
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap (or declination)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Required facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, regulatory compliance education, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
  • Unit-specific competency exams including medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, and oncology (if applicable)
  • Skills checklist within 1 year of start, including oncology skills if assigned to oncology unit
  • Employment application and professional references (two required, supervisors preferred)

Additional Information

  • Floating to multiple units including Emergency Department to care for inpatient holds
  • On-call not required
  • No block scheduling available
  • Locals accepted, but pending licenses are not accepted
  • Return to office restrictions limit time off to no more than 7 days

Summary

This is a travel contract Registered Nurse position in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) float role requiring at least 2 years of nursing experience. The role demands strong telemetry, cardiac, and critical care skills with flexibility to float across multiple units including emergency care. Certifications in ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS are mandatory. Candidates must meet comprehensive compliance, immunization, and background check requirements. Weekend and holiday shifts are required, with a defined weekend shift commitment. First-time travelers are welcome.


Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of PCU (Progressive Care Unit) nursing experience, with PCU experience within the last year
  • 2 years of PCU Float nursing experience
  • Experience in an Acute Care setting
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIHSS certification and NIH Stroke Certification
  • Experience in MS/Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, and ER Holding work settings
  • Proficient in interpretation of dysrhythmias and telemetry (including remote monitoring)
  • Experience in post cardiac care including angiogram, MI, cardiac catheterization, and cardiac surgery pre/post care
  • Knowledge and experience with IV insulin protocols
  • Experience with pre/post hemodialysis management and renal failure care
  • Skilled in phlebotomy and PICC line management
  • Experience administering procedural sedation
  • Stroke (CVA) care experience
  • Experience with peripheral nerve block catheter care and total joint replacements
  • Experience managing chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
