Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Location: Abingdon, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Schedule: 36/36 (36 hours on, 36 hours off)
• Rotating weekends and holidays required
• No on-call duties
• Floating between units required
• Traveler’s permanent residence must be at least 100 miles from the hospital’s service area
• General orientation includes 16 hours of non-billable training, starting on Sundays (online CBLs)
• Hospital may cancel or call off one shift biweekly without penalty due to census changes
• Additional overtime shifts may be assigned as needed
• Expected to participate in nursing student support and clinical education alongside clinical care

Required Certifications

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (verify unit-specific requirements)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Other certifications may be required or preferred depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
• Minimum of 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with recent experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Background check within 30 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
• Education verification required
• Drug screening (9-panel) within 14 days of start
• Immunizations and health documents including:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (vaccine or declination)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
  • MMR titers (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella) or vaccination documentation
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination
  • Varicella titer or vaccination documentation
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season
• Respirator medical evaluation and fit testing completed onsite
• Photo for badge within 48 hours of contract signing
• Compliance with facility-specific dress code, uniform guidelines, and safety policies

Experience

• Specialty: Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
• Years of experience: Minimum 1 year of recent Medical Surgical experience
• No explicit requirement for prior travel experience

Additional Notes

• Must complete all required documentation and compliance forms within specified timeframes
• Participate actively in clinical education for nursing students
• Floating and flexibility in assignments expected
