Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry (Travel/Contract)
Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Position: PCU Registered Nurse on Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 – 7:15)
- Patient Ratio: 1:5
- Facility Type: Community Hospital with 240 staffed beds, including a 16-bed ICU
- Charting System: EPIC
- Parking: Free
- Scrub Color: Navy
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, including community hospital experience
- Previous charge nurse experience preferred but not required
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Must be able to float within scope to other departments, units, and facilities as needed
- Required to work 8 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule period (combination of Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
- Holiday shifts and charge nurse assignments as needed
Clinical Skills & Competencies
- Work settings: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry, Telemetry Oncology, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response: Dysrhythmia interpretation and management, telemetry monitoring, rapid response team participation
- Cardiovascular care: Post cardiac angiogram, MI, pre/post cardiac catheterization
- Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
- Renal: Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV therapy/phlebotomy: Blood product administration, central line, peripheral line, PICC line management, IV starts
- Medication management: Heparin protocols, cardiac and vasoactive drips (no titration), PCA
- Neurological/psychiatric: Stroke (CVA) care
- Respiratory: Chest tubes, CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, oxygen therapy, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy care
- Wound care including wound vac and isolation precautions
- Surgical drains management
Preferred Skills
- Cardiovascular sheath removal
- Accessing ports and phlebotomy
- Orthopedics: total joint replacements
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only; certs of completion accepted for up to 1 month until official card issued
- NIH Stroke Certification (NIHSS) – must be updated annually
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) preferred
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)
Licensure
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Missouri
- Primary source verification required (NURSYS for Missouri licenses)
- Pending licenses not accepted
Special Requirements
- Experience with intermediate level of care patients including: AMI, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure, chest pain, vascular/PVD, sepsis/infection, pneumonia, alcohol withdrawal, suicidal ideation, GI bleed, pre/post cardiac cath patients, femoral line/groin site management
- Telemetry equipment use required
Work Conditions & Additional Info
- No on-call required
- No block scheduling accommodation
- Local candidates accepted
- Regular floating between units and facilities may be required
- Maximum return-to-office (RTO) restrictions: no more than 7 days
- Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks
- Drug testing, background checks, and various health screenings required prior to start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start required
- Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations and titers required: Tdap, TB screening, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, flu vaccination or exemption during flu season
- Annual compliance training and facility-specific documents must be completed prior to start
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
Compliance & Background Checks
- Criminal background check within 6 months required, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- State-specific checks for Missouri required (e.g., Family Care Safety Registry, Highway Patrol)
- Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois (if applicable)
Required Documentation Prior to Start
- Government-issued ID (driver’s license or state ID)
- Employment application
- Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency within 12 months
- Badge photo meeting facility standards
- Signed HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
- Regulatory compliance education quiz with minimum 80% score
- TB questionnaire and documentation
- Hepatitis B declination form (facility specific)
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 2 years of telemetry nursing experience, including telemetry experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification, updated annually
