PICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Paramus, New Jersey


Job Details

  • Location: Paramus, New Jersey
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours
  • Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Patient Care:
    • 4 PICU beds and 8 convertible beds (monitored or pediatric)
    • Nurse-to-patient ratio: PICU 1:2, Pediatrics 1:3-4
    • No PCAs on unit; total care required by nurse
    • Care includes COVID-19 patients
    • Equipment used: CPAP, Vapo, high flow oxygen

Job Responsibilities

  • Float as helping hands only
  • Self-scheduling with manager final approval; block scheduling allowed
  • Must work every third weekend
  • Must pass a basic arrhythmia exam

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New Jersey
  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nursing experience
  • PICU nursing experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Successful completion of a Basic Arrhythmia Exam
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Health and Compliance Requirements (Must be completed within 72 hours of contract signing)

  • Physical exam or statement of health signed by MD, DO, PA, or NP
  • Negative 9-panel drug test (within 30 days of start)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • COVID-19 vaccine and booster (mandatory)
    • Flu vaccine (mandatory for current season, no exemptions)
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - proof of 2 vaccinations or positive titer
    • Varicella - proof of 2 vaccinations or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody titer or declination
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (annual Quantiferon Gold or 2-step PPD)
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent)
  • Completion of facility-specific self-learning module and post-test (100% required)

Background and Verification

  • 7-year background check including:
    • National Sex Offender Registry
    • Criminal background
    • OIG Sanction Search
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM verification
  • Employment verification for last 7 years (no gaps over 30 days without explanation)
  • Two professional references required:
    • One supervisory reference from within last 12 months
    • One professional reference from within last 3 years
  • Education verification (diploma or degree)
  • NURSYS license verification within 30 days prior to start (no temporary or emergency licenses unless approved)

Competency and Testing Requirements

  • Core Competency Exams (Parts I, II, III) annually with minimum 80% passing score
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam annually (80% pass rate)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam annually (80% pass rate) except for certain excluded units
  • Color blindness test (Ishihara) within 1 year of assignment start
  • Acknowledgement of pass/fail testing required

Additional Notes

  • Must be able to start ASAP; latest acceptable start date is May 4
  • Local candidates within 75 miles considered
  • No temporary or emergency licenses accepted without prior approval
  • Must be willing to work assigned weekends and float as needed
  • No PCAs on unit; nurse responsible for total patient care

This position is ideal for experienced PICU RNs who meet the licensure and certification requirements and are ready for a travel contract in New Jersey with a focus on pediatric critical care.
