Operating Room Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 3 years of Operating Room nursing experience
• First-time travelers not accepted (prior travel experience required)
• Must have general OR and trauma experience (Level I trauma experience required)
• Experience with all service lines except cardiovascular (CV)
• Required case experience by specialty:

  • Bariatric: Laparoscopic assisted cases
  • General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Partial/total Thyroidectomy, Whipple
  • Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
  • Orthopedic: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
  • Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
  • Transplant: Organ donation
  • Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
  • Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
• Emergency management skills: Code response, Fire safety, Latex allergy management, Malignant Hyperthermia
• Equipment/instrumentation experience: Electrosurgical units, Fiber optic light sources/cords, Hana tables
• Professional knowledge: Administration of blood products, Infection control, Radiation safety, Specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure, Urinary bladder catheterization
• Cerner experience preferred

Schedule & Work Conditions

• Weekend requirement: 1 weekend per month
• On-call: Yes, approximately 1 per week (though less frequent recently)
• Floating: Rare, only within skill set
• Block scheduling: Not accommodated
• Must live at least 50 miles from the facility (locals not accepted)
• All requested time off must be approved by manager
• Guaranteed hours: Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation

Required Licenses & Certifications

• Active Illinois RN license in hand or in application process
• BLS required (AHA or RQI acceptable)
• CNOR preferred
• ACLS, PALS may be required based on unit/specialty

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Valid US Driver’s License or State ID
• Background checks within 30 days of start, including:

  • SSN Trace, Counties, States, National Criminal, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level 3
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
• Education verification (degree/transcript)
• Fingerprinting in Illinois required for clinical candidates without IL license (must be done in-state 3 business days prior to start)
• Competency exam required for clinical candidates
• Badge photo (color, mid-shoulders up, plain background) due before start
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate provider, confirming good health and ability to perform job functions
• Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
• TB questionnaire updated annually
• Immunizations or documented immunity required for:

  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B (vaccine series, positive titer, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines, positive titer, or declination)
• 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (negative dilute requires retest)
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
• References: 2 professional references required for clinical candidates
• Skills checklist required for clinical candidates

This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with trauma and multi-specialty surgical experience who have completed prior travel contracts and hold an active Illinois nursing license or are in the process of obtaining one.
