Medical Surgical Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Saint Louis, Missouri
Position Overview
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
- Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:00 - 7:30)
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (can sign for 36 or 48 hours)
- Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 on all shifts except nights
- Start Date: Approximately 3-4 weeks out depending on compliance tier
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Will float within service line as needed
- Local Candidates: Not accepted within 75-mile radius
- Pending License: Accepted
Patient Population & Unit Details
- Patient Diagnoses: Acute care patients including infection, renal, cardiac, pulmonary, oncology, orthopedic, bariatric, pre-transplant, observation, psychology, long stay, and COVID
- Patient Turnover: High turnover; patients may stay only a few hours to a day during high census periods
- Special Procedures/Equipment: Alaris pumps, CPAPs, BIPAPs, bladder scanners, lifts, hover mats, EKGs, scales
- Role may include primary care duties and care for tracheostomy patients
- Additional training provided to manage a wide variety of patient conditions
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Missouri
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Schedule & Work Conditions
- Block scheduling: Not accommodated
- Weekend work: Every other weekend required
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Within service line as needed
- Restrictions on time off: No more than 7 days of time off per 13-week contract
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required (driver’s license for home health roles)
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
- Fingerprinting required for assignments in Illinois long-term care or rehab units
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required prior to start
- State-specific background checks required for Missouri and Illinois placements
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be current throughout assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (not required annually)
- Fit mask testing required annually (N95 respirators)
- Immunizations and health screenings:
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Tdap vaccine or declination required (cannot decline in Bone Marrow Transplant Unit)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination required (no exemptions in certain units)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Hepatitis B declination required (vaccination not mandatory)
- Required facility-specific documents include HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene policy, fingernail policy, dress code policy, and regulatory compliance education (annual quiz with 80% passing score)
Orientation & Training
- Orientation modules required for all RNs, completed through online platform (approx. 16 hours)
- Additional unit-specific certifications may be required (e.g., Trauma Nursing Core Course for extended Burn ICU assignments)
- On-site CPI training available if needed
References & History
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start
- Employment application must be submitted and uploaded for facility review
- Performance evaluations may be requested but are not mandatory for extensions or per diem

This position offers a challenging and diverse acute care nursing experience with a high patient turnover and a wide variety of patient diagnoses. It is ideal for RNs with at least 2 years of experience who are comfortable with medical-surgical nursing, telemetry skills, and dysrhythmia interpretation.
