Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 4 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Unit & Patient Population
- Work in a 26-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), a critical care step-down unit.
- Patient population includes adult acute care patients requiring specialized care beyond general medical-surgical units.
- Patients have continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring.
- Care for patients needing airway management, acute BIPAP support, arterial lines, central lines, and titrated medicated IV infusions.
- Patient ratio: 1:5 to 1:7 for MedSurg patients.
- Floating to other units is required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York.
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Med Surg experience.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIHSS certification.
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
Additional Requirements & Preferences
- Candidates must live within a 75-mile radius of the facility or be a first-time traveler (first-time travelers accepted).
- Must be able to work night shifts and every other weekend.
- Floating to other units as needed.
- Prior travel experience is not required.
Facility & Environment
- Tertiary care hospital with 528 staffed beds.
- The unit receives patients from Emergency Department, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, ICU, and medical-surgical floors.
- The team uses a multidisciplinary approach to provide vigilant and compassionate care.
Onboarding & Compliance Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, SSN trace, national sex offender registry, education verification, and eligibility to work in the U.S.
- Various certifications and verifications required within 30 days of start, including:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) as required by unit
- NURSYS license verification
- State license primary source verification
- NIH Stroke Certification (annual update)
- Health requirements to be completed within 5 days of contract signing, including:
- Physical exam (within 1 year)
- Fit mask test (annual)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year)
- Immunizations or titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
- Snellen eye exam (within 1 year)
- Required to complete facility-specific orientation and safety manual acknowledgment.
- References and employment verification required for travel agency compliance.
