Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Medical-Surgical/Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) - critical care step-down unit
  • Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Patient Ratio: 1:5 to 1:7 (MedSurg level)
  • Floating: Required
  • Patient Population: Adult acute care patients requiring specialized care beyond general med-surg, including continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring
  • Care includes airway management, acute BIPAP support, arterial and central lines, titrated medicated IV infusions
  • Unit Size: 26 beds

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in PCU - Progressive Care Unit, with recent experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Med Surg experience
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • NIHSS certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Health and Compliance Requirements

Candidates must complete the following health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of contract signing:

  • Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
  • Fit mask test (annual)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year) or TB questionnaire annually
  • Immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination (required during flu season)
  • Drug screening (within 30 days of start) covering multiple substances
  • Snellen eye exam (within 1 year)
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required

Background and Verification Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
  • 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, run monthly
  • Education verification from primary source (required unless CNA)
  • Foreign equivalency evaluation if education obtained internationally
  • Employment verification of at least 2 past employments (Aya direct candidates)
  • References: 2 within 3 years (Aya only)
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start
  • Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as required
  • Color blindness testing (one-time)
  • Facility-specific documents including photo for badge and orientation safety manual acknowledgment

Additional Notes

  • The unit is part of a tertiary care hospital with 528 staffed beds
  • Scrub color: Any combination of navy and white
  • Candidates must be adaptable, vigilant, and able to provide compassionate, evidence-based care in a multidisciplinary team environment
