Job Opportunity: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Muncie, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work in a trauma center Emergency Department with 48 beds, expandable to 62 beds using hall beds.
- Patient-to-nurse ratio: maximum 1:4 for regular ED patients; hold assignments may have ratios of 4:1 (progressive holds) and 5:1 (medical holds).
- Average of 6.6 behavioral health patients daily.
- Shift: Evening, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (3x12s).
- Must be willing to work charge nurse shifts.
- Floating is mandatory for all travelers, either within the hospital or to nearby affiliate hospitals.
- Local Indiana residents are not accepted for this position.
- First-time travelers are accepted.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Trauma experience
- Certifications required:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association
Background and Compliance Requirements
- Background check within 90 days of start, including:
- 7-year residential/work history
- SSN trace, county criminal, statewide, national sex offender, FACIS Level III
- Education verification (may be pending at start if needed)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start (no instant tests).
- Employment application covering 7 years with explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or higher.
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95). On-site fit testing available only with prior approval.
- Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year of start. If positive, chest X-ray within 2 years and proof of positive history required.
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella (history of disease not accepted)
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine preferred but not required.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31). Declinations are not accepted.
Additional Information
- Must complete facility-specific compliance and orientation documents prior to start.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
- Color blindness testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required with minimum 100% score on online test.
- Floating assignments may require working at different units or affiliate hospitals.
Summary
This is a travel Registered Nurse position in an Emergency Department trauma center requiring strong trauma and emergency nursing skills, multiple certifications, and flexibility to float. The role includes charge nurse responsibilities and working evening 12-hour shifts. Candidates must meet comprehensive background, health, and immunization requirements. First-time travelers are welcome, but local Indiana residents are not eligible.
