Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool - Registered Nurse

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float to various pediatric units including PICU, NICU, pediatric med-surg, pediatric PACU, pediatric ED boarders, and postpartum/mother-baby units
  • Must have PICU and NICU experience and be comfortable with pediatrics
  • Pediatric PACU experience highly preferred
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed
  • Work schedule: Days, 4 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM), 48 hours per week
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
  • Time off: 40 hours can be approved; no return to office (RTO) approved during first 2 weeks of assignment
  • Must adhere to float policy
  • Epic electronic health record experience required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of Critical Care Float experience, including within the last year
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
    • Infant-Driven Feeding Certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (must be carried during hours of service)
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year criminal check (all locations lived/worked in past 7 years)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM check updated every 30 days
    • HHS/OIG check updated every 30 days
    • Education verification (official transcript preferred; BSN preferred, ASN minimum if no BSN)
    • Abuse registry search (only if assigned to specific behavioral health units)
  • State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months attesting ability to meet physical demands (Aya form preferred)
  • Immunizations and health screenings:
    • Tdap vaccination (no exemptions allowed)
    • 2-step TB test or equivalent (Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations accepted)
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody titer required (specific lab requirements apply)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or titer required; declination required if titer negative)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (no exemptions accepted)
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and mother-baby units (not required for this pediatric float pool role)
  • Professional appearance guidelines review and acknowledgment
  • Release authorization and traveler compliance forms completed prior to start
  • Fit testing may be required onsite depending on unit assignment

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Skills checklist and competency exams must be current and updated annually
  • Fingerprinting required for behavioral health assignments only
  • No block scheduling or guaranteed days off during first 2 weeks
  • Must be comfortable floating across multiple pediatric specialty units

This position is ideal for experienced pediatric critical care nurses with strong PICU and NICU backgrounds who are flexible and able to float across various pediatric units.
