Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool - Registered Nurse

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Float to various pediatric units including PICU, NICU, pediatric med-surg, pediatric PACU, pediatric ED boarders, and postpartum/mother-baby units
  • Must have experience in PICU and NICU and be comfortable with pediatric patients
  • Previous NICU/PICU float pool experience considered
  • Day shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
  • Block scheduling cannot be accommodated or guaranteed
  • Time off: 40 hours can be approved; no return-to-office (RTO) allowed during first 2 weeks of assignment
  • Must adhere to float policy
  • Epic electronic health record experience required

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of Critical Care Float experience, including within the last year
  • Experience in PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
  • Experience in an inpatient setting
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Infant-Driven Feeding Advancing Oral Feeding Practice in the NICU certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Certifications & Competencies

  • Must have current certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP
  • Infant Driven Feeding™ certification for NICU and Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool nurses
  • Medication and pharmacology competency exams as applicable

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • Education verification: BSN preferred; ASN required if BSN not held
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated every 30 days
  • Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check required if assigned to behavioral health or specific pediatric units
  • Fingerprinting required for behavioral health and certain units (results must be cleared prior to start)
  • Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Employment application and skills checklist must be completed and updated annually

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (Tdap after age 11, no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with 2-step PPD within 1 year and 90 days of start (Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; no declinations allowed for measles
  • Hepatitis B: Positive Hep B Surface Antibody titer required or negative Surface Antibody and Antigen titers (no declinations/exemptions)
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required; declination accepted but will not hold clearance
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (no exemptions or declinations accepted)
  • 10-panel drug screen including marijuana and fentanyl within 2 months of start, updated annually

Additional Information

  • Fit testing required for patient-facing clinical roles, completed onsite if needed
  • Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged
  • Release authorization, TB screening, and traveler compliance forms must be completed prior to start
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions and mother-baby units; not required for this pediatric float pool position

This position is ideal for experienced pediatric critical care nurses comfortable working across multiple pediatric specialties in a float pool setting.
