Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care in Labor and Delivery, including labor, induction, scheduled and unscheduled C-sections (including C-section with salpingectomy).
  • Manage patients with SROM, PPROM, hypertension, preeclampsia, and various antenatal and triage cases.
  • Utilize equipment such as CADD epidural pumps, Alaris IV pumps, Phillips wired and wireless monitors, Periwatch, Steadys, Hillrom labor beds, Draeger radiant warmers, vein light, and v scan.
  • Follow AWHONN staffing guidelines: typically 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio for active labor, 1:2 for non-active labor, and up to 1:3 for triage or antepartum patients. May require taking additional patients during high census.
  • Float to Maternal-Child Health (MCH) units as needed.
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays during the contract.

Schedule

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:00 to 6:30)
  • Weekly hours: 36 hours

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Indiana.
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Certifications required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring/Electronic Fetal Monitoring)

Licensure & Background Requirements

  • Valid Indiana RN license verified online within 30 days before start.
  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including:
    • 7-year residential/work history
    • SSN trace, county, statewide, national sex offender, FACIS Level III
    • Education verification (may be pending at start if new traveler)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start date.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (N95 or approved respirators). On-site fit testing available only with prior approval; some locations do not allow on-site fit testing.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
  • Tuberculosis screening (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year. If positive, chest X-ray and documentation required.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required:
    • Rubeola (Measles): positive titer or 2 vaccines (declinations not accepted)
    • Mumps: positive titer or 2 vaccines (declinations not accepted)
    • Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines (declinations not accepted)
    • Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines (declinations not accepted; history not accepted)
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended (not required)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31). Declinations not accepted.

Additional Information

  • Locals are not accepted for this travel position.
  • Guaranteed hours vary by shift pattern:
    • 8 or 10-hour shifts: 40 hours/week
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours: 36 hours/week
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours: 48 hours/week
  • Facility uses Cerner for charting.
  • Parking is free.
  • Must complete facility-specific compliance, confidentiality, orientation, and policy documents prior to start.
  • Must comply with facility restrictions: Indiana RNs are restricted from working at this facility after 11/30/2024 except for Periop/OR and certain allied roles.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a short-term acute care hospital with a focus on Labor and Delivery nursing in a supportive environment following professional staffing guidelines.
