Registered Nurse - PCU (Night Shift)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) - Orthopedics focus
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5; may occasionally flex to 1:6
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15)
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating within PCU floors and possibly other departments/units as needed
  • Charge RN and holiday shifts may be assigned as needed
  • No block scheduling accommodation
  • Local candidates not accepted; must live at least 75 miles from facility

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Certifications & Licenses

  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit specifics (e.g., Trauma Nursing Core Course recommended)

Equipment & Technology

  • Experience with traction devices, bulb syringe, braces, casts, crutches, doppler, walkers, hemovac
  • Familiarity with Alaris pumps and PCA pumps
  • Charting system: EPIC

Facility & Work Environment

  • Tertiary care hospital with 456 staffed beds
  • Recognized as a 5-time Magnet Aware hospital
  • Level 1 Trauma and Teaching hospital

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required annually
  • Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
    • Tdap (or Td for renewals)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccination, or MD statement required)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start (2-step PPD or equivalent)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (09/30 - 04/01)
  • Various facility-specific compliance documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Annual regulatory compliance education and unit-specific competency exams required

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required (preferably supervisors within the last year)
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start
  • Employment application must be completed and uploaded
  • Must be able to work within the facility’s floating and on-call requirements
  • No pending licenses accepted; must have active license at start
  • Return to work restrictions: no more than 7 days off before starting assignment
  • Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Notes

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Must be able to work holiday shifts and charge RN assignments as needed
  • Must comply with all facility policies and complete required orientation and training modules prior to start

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with trauma and orthopedic PCU experience seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment with a strong focus on professional development and patient care excellence.
