Description
Registered Nurse β MedSurg/Telemetry
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)
Shift: 3x12 hour rotation, Day (7:00 AM β 7:00 PM) / Night (7:00 PM β 7:00 AM)
Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend
Floating: Required
Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live more than 75 miles away
Patient Ratio Experience: Required to have experience managing a 1:6 patient ratio (able to handle 1:5 to 1:7 on this high-volume unit)
Charge Nurse Experience: Required
Charting System: EPIC experience required
Unit & Patient Population
- Complex care unit for Medicine, orthopedic overflow, and complex long-term patients
- High patient volume requiring strong multitasking and clinical skills
Required Skills & Clinical Competencies
- MedSurg and Telemetry nursing, including on-unit monitoring
- Use of Rapid Response and Code teams
- Pacemaker management (temporary and permanent)
- Feeding tube care and management
- Blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
- Phlebotomy and IV starts
- Heparin protocols
- Orthopedic trauma and total joint replacements
- Surgical drain management
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, and portable oxygen tank use
- Tracheostomy management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care including Wound Vac
Required Certifications
- New York RN license in hand (no exceptions)
- BLS (AHA provider/instructor/RQI accepted)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (valid and to be updated annually)
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM as required by unit (AHA accepted)
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- State License Primary Source Verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS Verification within 30 days of start
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
- Experience in Charge Nurse roles
- Proficient in use of Rapid Response and Code teams
- Experience managing temporary and permanent pacemakers
- Skilled in blood product administration
- Competent in central line and PICC line care and management
- Knowledgeable in heparin protocols
- Experience with total joint replacements and surgical drain management
- Skilled in High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) and portable oxygen tank use
- Proficient with EPIC charting system
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Health & Compliance Requirements
Candidates must complete the following health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of contract signing:
- Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
- Fit mask test (annual) β acceptable masks include Halyard duckbill 1870, 1860 Regular, or 1860 Small; PAPR accepted if failed
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year) or TB questionnaire in lieu of annual renewal
- Immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, opiates, etc.)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
- Snellen eye exam within 1 year (not required annually)
- COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
Background & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driverβs License or State ID)
- 7-year criminal background check within 3 months of start (including felony, SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, education verification)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, run monthly thereafter
- Foreign equivalency education evaluation if applicable
- Education verification from primary source (no hard copy degrees accepted)
- Employment application and work history verification (minimum 2 past employments verified)
- References (2 within 3 years) required for agency submission
- Photo for badge (passport-style with solid background)
- Facility-specific compliance attestations and forms to be completed prior to start
Facility & Work Environment
- Tertiary care hospital with 528 staffed beds
- Uniform scrub color: navy bottoms, navy or white tops
- Charting system: EPIC
This position requires a highly skilled MedSurg/Telemetry RN comfortable with complex patient care, high patient volumes, and a fast-paced environment. Candidates must have a valid New York RN license and meet all certification, health, and background requirements prior to starting.
