Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15)
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5; may occasionally flex to 1:6
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating within scope to different departments, units, and facilities as needed
  • Charge RN Assignments: May be required
  • Patient Diagnoses: Pulmonary, wounds, urology, general cardiac, neurological, and renal conditions

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Drug testing within 1 year, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Annual fit mask (N95) testing required
  • Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (Tdap every 10 years)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccines, or MD statement required)
    • Flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sep-Apr)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year, with yearly TB questionnaire
  • Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois

Documentation & Training

  • Employment application required
  • Unit-specific skills checklist within 1 year of start (oncology skills checklist if applicable)
  • Competency exams required:
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG exam (minimum 80% pass rate)
    • Medication/pharmacology competency exam
    • Unit-specific competency exam (e.g., oncology if applicable)
  • Annual regulatory compliance education and HIPAA acknowledgement
  • Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • Review and sign facility policies including hand hygiene, fingernail, dress code, confidentiality, latex allergy questionnaire
  • Orientation modules (~16 hours) required for all RNs, completed via online platform before start
  • Healthstream modules for specific facilities may be required

Additional Notes

  • Must be able to work holiday shifts as needed
  • Must comply with facility policies and procedures
  • References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
  • Performance evaluations may be requested but are not mandatory for extensions or per diem status

This position offers an opportunity to work in a tertiary care, Level 1 trauma hospital with a 5-time Magnet recognition, using Epic charting system and wearing navy scrubs. Parking is free.
