Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry Unit
Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Position: PCU Registered Nurse on a Medical-Surgical/Telemetry unit
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 – 7:15)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
- Facility Type: Community Hospital with 240 staffed beds, including a 16-bed ICU
- Charting System: EPIC
- Parking: Free
- Scrub Color: Navy
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, including community hospital experience
- Previous charge nurse experience preferred but not required
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Must be able to float regularly within scope to different departments, units, and facilities as needed
- Required to work 8 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule period (combination of Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
- No on-call required
- Must live at least 75 miles from the facility (locals not accepted)
- Maximum of 7 days allowed for return to office (RTO) restrictions
- Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Clinical Skills & Competencies
- Work settings include MS/Telemetry, Telemetry Oncology, Cardiac Telemetry, ER Holding, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response: interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, use of rapid response teams
- Cardiovascular care: post cardiac angiogram, post MI, pre/post cardiac catheterization
- Gastrointestinal: feeding tube care and management
- Renal: pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV therapy/phlebotomy: blood product administration, central line, peripheral line, PICC line management, starting IVs
- Medication management: heparin protocols, management of cardiac and vasoactive drips (no titration), PCA
- Neurological/psychiatric: care for CVA patients
- Respiratory care: chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy care
- Wound care including wound vacs and surgical drains
- Isolation precautions and infection control
- Special patient populations: AMI, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure, chest pain, vascular/PVD, intermediate level of care, sepsis/infection, pneumonia, alcohol withdrawal, suicidal ideation, GI bleed, femoral line/groin site management, pre/post cath patients
Preferred Skills:
- Cardiovascular sheath removal
- Accessing ports and phlebotomy
- Orthopedics: total joint replacements
Certifications Required
- Current Registered Nurse license valid in Missouri
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA only
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only (certificates of completion accepted for up to 1 month)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS) – must be updated annually unless otherwise specified
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification preferred
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) – verify with unit-specific requirements
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Government-issued ID required (driver’s license for home health positions)
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, sex offender registry, and international searches if applicable
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
- Missouri Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) and Highway Patrol checks as applicable
- Fingerprinting required for assignments involving long-term care or rehab units in Illinois
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP)
- Annual flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 – April 1)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually
- Negative TB screening or chest x-ray within 1 year of start, with yearly TB questionnaire
- Immunization or immunity documentation required for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and Tdap (with some unit-specific exemptions)
- Required facility-specific documents: HIPAA acknowledgement, latex allergy questionnaire, confidentiality form, hand hygiene policy, fingernail policy, dress code policy, regulatory compliance education, orientation modules (approx. 16 hours)
Additional Requirements
- Must complete unit-specific competency exams annually, including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency (80% pass rate required)
- Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start; oncology skills checklist required for Med Surg-Oncology unit
- Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year
- Employment application must be submitted and uploaded for facility review
- Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months of start)
Work Environment & Other Details
- Floating between units and departments is expected to meet facility needs
- No block scheduling accommodations
- No pending licenses accepted
- No on-call duties
- Telemetry equipment and monitoring used regularly
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
