Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)

Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a mixed acuity unit including medical patients and some PCU level of care patients.
  • Unit specialties include oncology, stroke, cardiac, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary care.
  • Patient ratios: MS patients 1:5-6, PCU patients 1:3-4.
  • Care involves managing unstable strokes, BiPAP, and drips such as cardizem, amiodarone, and insulin.
  • Must have solid neurological nursing experience.
  • Accepting RNs with experience in MS/Telemetry or PCU.
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:00 PM to 6:30 AM).

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
  • BLS (AHA only, RQI acceptable)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for stroke unit)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Indiana (pending license accepted)
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Neurology experience
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background checks including 7-year history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, and education verification
  • Education verification (official transcript or diploma)
  • Online license verification within 30 days before start
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
  • Unit competency exam
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, 100% score required)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (N95 or approved respirators)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Strongly recommended but not required
  • Tuberculosis testing within 1 year (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) with chest x-ray if positive history
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31); no declinations accepted

Additional Notes

  • Locals are NOT accepted for this travel contract.
  • Must complete facility-specific forms and orientation packets prior to start.
  • On-site fit testing is limited and requires prior approval.
  • Prior travel experience is NOT explicitly required.

Onboarding is somewhat tedious, but they do dot every "i" and cross every T.
