Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location
Kalamazoo, MI
Schedule / Job Type
Contract | Night Shift (3x12 Hours, 19:00–07:30) | Onsite | Every other weekend required | Holidays required
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care on a Medical Surgical unit with a standard ratio of 1:6, with support staff available during higher-census situations
- Float to other units including Medical Surgical, ICU, and the ED waiting area to accommodate Medical Surgical patient overflow as needed
- Perform and manage a broad range of clinical skills including telemetry remote monitoring, wound care, chest tube management, tracheostomy care, and non-invasive airway management
- Administer blood products, manage IV access including peripheral lines, PICC lines, and ports, and oversee medication administration including heparin, insulin, and PCA
- Provide pre- and post-hemodialysis management, feeding tube care, colostomy care, and surgical drain management
- Maintain compliance with isolation precautions and demonstrate strong post-surgical competencies throughout all patient interactions
Required Qualifications
- Valid Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Minimum 1.5 years of Medical Surgical or PCU experience required
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required
- NIH Stroke Scale certification required
- Demonstrated competency in post-surgical nursing care
- Ability and willingness to float to Medical Surgical, ICU, and ED waiting areas as needed
Preferred Experience / Skills
- Experience with high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), oxygen delivery systems, and oral suctioning
- Familiarity with Emerson and Pleur-evac chest tube systems
- Experience with wound VAC therapy and complex wound care management
