Description

Unit Description – Labor & Delivery (L&D) Unit

Type of Care:

  • Provides comprehensive intrapartum, antepartum, and postpartum nursing care for low- to high-risk obstetric patients.
  • Focused on safe labor, delivery, recovery, and transition of care for both mother and newborn.
  • Incorporates evidence-based practices to support patient safety, maternal well-being, and neonatal outcomes.

Patient Population:

  • Adult and adolescent females during labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.
  • Care provided to high-risk obstetric patients including those with preeclampsia, diabetes, preterm labor, and other pregnancy complications.

Average Census:

  • Variable based on deliveries and acuity level.

Shift & Schedule:

  • 12-hour shifts (3x12) with rotating weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Flexible scheduling to meet departmental needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide total, patient-centered care using the nursing process and evidence-based practice.
  • Manage laboring patients receiving magnesium sulfate, oxytocin, and antihypertensive therapies.
  • Assist with vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, and high-risk obstetric procedures.
  • Monitor fetal heart rate patterns using external and internal fetal monitoring systems.
  • Assess maternal and fetal response to labor interventions and medications.
  • Provide immediate postpartum care, including newborn stabilization and breastfeeding support.
  • Educate patients and families regarding birth process, postpartum recovery, and newborn care.
  • Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in Epic.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital, legal, and regulatory standards of care.

Skills & Procedures:

  • Fetal heart rate interpretation (external/internal).
  • Insertion and monitoring of intrauterine pressure catheters (IUPC).
  • Administration of magnesium sulfate for seizure prophylaxis and management.
  • Oxytocin induction and augmentation of labor.
  • Management of obstetric emergencies: preeclampsia/eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse.
  • Circulate and recover patients undergoing cesarean delivery.
  • Neonatal resuscitation and immediate newborn care.
  • Pain management support including epidural and general anesthesia cases.

Systems & Communication:

  • Documentation: Epic
  • Communication: SBAR

Certifications Required:

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years of intrapartum L&D nursing experience required.
  • Experience administering and monitoring magnesium sulfate therapy required.
  • 1 year of travel experience preferred (required for travel positions).
  • Epic experience highly preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) considered with relevant experience or active BSN enrollment.

Environment:

  • Fast-paced, high-acuity Labor & Delivery unit within a tertiary care hospital setting.
  • Emphasizes Relationship-Centered Care, teamwork, and patient advocacy.
